Caring For Your Flowers: Newcastle Florists
Unwrapping Your Flowers
All of our flowers here at Newcastle Flowers are imported directly from their site of cultivation in Holland, they are then conditioned, cleaned and arranged into either a bouquet or other floral arrangement by our expert florists. We want to provide the freshest quality of flowers available we advise that your flowers may take up to 48 hours to fully bloom. The incredible freshness of your flowers means that they will last up to twice as long so that you can enjoy them for as long as possible. Of course, due to the different selection of flowers that we supply and use in our arrangements some will bloom earlier than others. If you will be placing the flowers into a vase or container of your own then please be sure to remove any extra foliage. If the foliage is left on and sits in the water then this will increase the amount of bacteria and therefore affect the flowers as the water will become infested. Although the gerbera looks beautiful, it is vulnerable to large amounts of bacteria in the water.
Newcastle Florists suggest that you should always freshly cut your flowers before placing them into a container of your own, as this allows the stems to take in large amounts of water ensuring that your flowers will be as stunning and vibrant as possible. If the stems of the blooms are dry then water will not reach the flowers, so it is advisable to cut the stems regularly to ensure that your flowers do not die of thirst. Florists Newcastle advise that you cut the stems at an angle and at about 2cm above the end of the stem, which will ensure lasting freshness. Although it has been common practice to smash the end of the stems to increase water flow Newcastle Flowers would advise against doing so as it may damage the vessels within the stems which will have an effect on the flowers’ ability to absorb water.
Arranging Your Flowers
Once you have unwrapped your flowers you can prepare them to be placed in a beautiful vase of your choosing. Flowers Newcastle can arrange your flowers in a vase for you, provided by ourselves at a little extra cost, to save you the time of arranging the flowers yourself. If you are placing them in a vase of your own then ensure that the container is clean and filled with lukewarm water so as to aid the flow of water through the stem to the flower. A care packet is provided along with your delivery that consists of a small booklet advising you on how to care for your flowers and a sachet of flower food to promote growth and help your flowers to reach their fullest potential. It would be best to add the sachet of flower food to the vase before adding your flowers, and then make sure that the water does not reach the foliage as this will increase the growth rate of bacteria in the water.
Temperature and Display Area
Newcastle Florists recommend that your flowers are kept at a temperature of 18-22 Celsius at most. If your flowers are left in high temperatures then they will wilt and colder temperatures will also damage the flowers due to frost. If you keep your flowers in a cooler place then they will last longer, especially if they are kept away from direct sunlight and any warm areas, such as next to electrical appliances or radiators. Leaving your flowers somewhere warm will result in them becoming damaged and will leave them withered.
Another variable to watch out for when placing your flowers is ripening fruits which produce small amounts of ethylene gas which can sometimes increase the growth rate of flowers but will unfortunately stunt their life span. If you have any questions or queries about how to care for your flowers then please do not hesitate to contact one of our dedicated florists via email or telephone and we will aid you in any way that we can.
